We offer several programmes designed to empower you with the knowledge and skills required to work with Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases (F-Gas) in compliance with national and European Union (EU) regulations. If you handle F-Gas at your workplace, you are legally required to hold valid F-Gas certification as recognised by the European Union under EC 573/2024.
Our programmes are approved by the national qualifications awarding body – Quality and Qualifications Ireland (QQI), the national awarding body for F-Gas Registration – FGR and REAL Alternatives Europe.
Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board was the recipient of the Award for Best Training at the Institute of Refrigeration Ireland’s (IRI) Industry Awards 2024. IRI is the national body for refrigeration and air-conditioning professionals.

F-Gas (Category 1) Certification

QQI Level 5 Special Purpose Award

This course provides you with the relevant knowledge and skills to work on any equipment containing F-Gases. Certificate holders may carry out all refrigerant handling activities for any size of RAC systems containing HFC refrigerants.

You will learn about leakage checking and the recovery, installation, repair, maintenance, servicing, and decommissioning of equipment containing F-Gas.

Certification and Progression

Upon successful completion, you will have the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out intensive work on large RAC systems to meet current F-Gas handling standards and compliance requirements laid out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Eligibility Criteria

Access to this course is restricted to qualified RAC engineers or RAC apprentices.

F-Gas (Category 2) Certification

QQI Level 5 Special Purpose Award

This course provides you with the relevant knowledge and skills to work on equipment containing F-Gas up to 3 kg, or less than 6 kg for systems (if hermetically sealed) in compliance with current European Union (EU) regulations.

Equipment can include stationary refrigeration, air conditioning and heat pump systems, and units in refrigerated trucks.

You will learn about leakage-checking systems with over 3 kg charge, provided no intrusive works are carried out. You will also learn how to recover, install, repair, maintain, service and decommission equipment containing F-Gas up to 3 kg, or less than 6 kg for systems if hermetically sealed.

Certification and Progression

Upon successful completion, you will have the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out intensive work on equipment containing up to 3 kg of F-Gas. You will also be awarded a QQI Level 5 Specific Purpose Certificate in F-gas Handling in Small RACHPT&T Systems Category II.

Eligibility Criteria

Access to this course is restricted to qualified RAC engineers, electricians, plumbers or other related qualifications such as mechanical engineer.

Handling Flammable Refrigerants Certification

REAL Alternatives Europe
This course equips learners with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to safely handle, service, and work with alternative refrigerants. The training covers the properties, applications, and safe management of the following refrigerant types:
  • Hydrocarbon (HC) refrigerants: R290, R1270, R600a
  • HFC refrigerant: R32
  • HFO refrigerants: R1234ze, R1234yf
  • HFO blends: R454A
Certification and Progression

Upon successful completion, you will have the necessary knowledge and skills to carry out intrusive work on RACHPT&T systems that contain flammable refrigerants to meet current F-Gas handling standards and compliance requirements laid out by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates must hold a recognised trade qualification or be undertaking their apprenticeship (e.g. refrigeration and air conditioning, electrical, plumbing, or mechanical or electrical engineering qualifications). Learners MUST hold a European recognised F-gas Category 1 or Category 2 qualification, prior to enrolling on the course.
